“Amid Shelling, We Chose to Redecorate”. The Account of Ihor from Zaporizhzhia

Yet another bombardment of Zaporizhzhia on March 22 found Ihor at the marketplace. A sudden phone call from his mother brought alarming news: the forceful impact of a blast had shattered the windows of his apartment. Fortunately, his mother had been spared from harm; the taped windows and curtains had successfully kept the glass fragments at bay. That very day, Ihor singlehandedly boarded up the windows with plywood.

This family, used to offering assistance when times were tough, now finds itself in need. Before Ihor’s return, they had accommodated a woman traveling through the city with the intent of rescuing her mother from dangerous territory. In an attempt to foster a sense of comfort for the woman and her mother, they prepared a separate room and even decorated it with fresh wallpaper. For Ihor’s wife, assisting IDPs is an integral part of her role in the social protection department.

Despite the current circumstances, Ihor is steadfast in his decision to stay in Zaporizhzhia, as it is home to his extensive kinship. He maintains an optimistic attitude, and even before that bomb hit, already during the full-scale war, he has renovated his home. Ihor humorously reflects, “As they were shelling, we busied ourselves with wallpapering.” Recently, he even welcomed an old stray dog into his fold, having failed to locate its owners. Thus, the addition of this new pet expanded his large family.

Our team is prepared to assist this family in the refurbishment of their home. We plan to replace the windows of their apartment soon as part of the project “Humanitarian Assistance to Besieged Cities and IDP-Hosting Locations Inside Ukraine.”

The “Humanitarian Assistance to Besieged Cities and IDP-Hosting Locations Inside Ukraine” initiative is undertaken by the Charity Foundation Stabilization Support Services, with the support of the humanitarian organization CARE.Ukraine.
