We continue to help Kherson residents with minor repairs to their homes damaged by the war. Recently, the Foundation finished replacing five windows in a private house belonging to the family of anesthesiologist Ruslan. The doctor has been working in Kherson all his life. He didn’t leave the city even during the occupation and kept working throughout.
“We have already survived four air strikes: two were less destructive, and the other two caused much damage. The first one hit the corner of our house. All the windows were smashed, and we had to move to the bathhouse, where we also boarded up the windows with plywood. The last one was very hard for us,” Ruslan says, “I went outside in the evening, heard a whistle, and fell down. After that, I got up and saw that I was badly wounded, and blood was gushing from my artery.”
That was when a Grad rocket struck about five meters away from him. The man applied a tourniquet, which he had nearby in the car, crawled out of the yard, and collapsed. He regained consciousness in the operating room. His whole body was covered in shrapnel, but his left arm was affected the most, and it still had not fully recovered.
“It took a long time to recover, and as an anesthesiologist, I need two hands, five would be even better,” Ruslan jokes. “But a month after that, I resumed working, taught the nurses, and, thanks to their support, continued to help in the hospital.”
The Foundation fully replaced some of the windows in Ruslan’s house, as the frames had been destroyed. Other windows were fitted with new double-glazed windows. Now, his home is bright and warm.
“To be honest, I did not expect such a good quality of work. The Foundation’s team worked for three days: they installed windows, did the jambs, plastered, and painted. Everything is very well done and beautiful. We are so grateful and very happy,” Ruslan said.
The repairs are being carried out within the project Lifesaving Shelter, MPCA, SRH, and Protection Assistance for Conflict-Affected Communities in Rural Hromadas in Mykolaivska and Khersonska Oblasts implemented by the CO CF SSS and Kherson NGO “Successful Woman”, in collaboration with the international humanitarian organization CARE, with the support of the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund. 103 premises have already been repaired as part of the project.
