Away from Shelling: The Story of Olha, Who Evacuated with Four Children

Hremyach is the northernmost village in Ukraine. Its boundary is the Ukrainian-Russian border. During the first months of the full-scale war, this village in the Chernihivska Oblast was under occupation. Living in the village is dangerous now because it is under constant shelling. There is no work there, all the equipment has been evacuated from the school, and people are leaving. Olha used to live in this village.

She is 35 years old. She has four children. Her daughter has a disability. A year ago, after the de-occupation of Chernihivska Oblast, she made up her mind to move out. “We quickly packed up and left,” says Olga, “We took everything that fit in our car, bringing only what we were able to. We are not going back.”

The ride was terrifying. But, according to Olha, she did it not so much for her own sake as for the sake of her children. Her daughter needs medication and medical supervision.

The family settled in the house of Olha’s grandmother in the village of Chernatske,Chernihivska Oblast. Fortunately, the house, although in poor condition, is still habitable. Although the family misses home, they love it here. In her native village, Olha’s children slept fully clothed and shod in order to quickly run out and hide in the shelter in case of shelling. Now they do not want to go back to danger.

We provided Olha with a hygiene kit to help her take care of her daughter and settle in at her new place.
