Comfort in the details: how Zaporizhia is improving temporary living conditions

People do not end up in temporary accommodation facilities by choice. Very often, these spaces are not initially designed for long-term living — due to cold rooms, old windows, and constant street noise. That is why even seemingly simple improvements, such as window replacement, can make a significant difference.

At the facility on Universytetska Street in Zaporizhzhia, work is currently underway as part of the initiative within the project “Enhancing resilience and protection of conflict-affected individuals, communities, and systems in central and eastern Ukraine.” So far, 21 new windows have already been installed, and the installation is expected to be fully completed in the coming days. After that, the team will proceed with finishing the window reveals to ensure the space is not only warmer but also properly completed and visually tidy.

The work is carried out in stages: first, the dismantling of old structures, followed by the installation of new ones, sealing, and preparation for finishing. Importantly, after each stage, the workers clean up thoroughly. All construction waste has already been collected, and the area has been put in order.

However, the most noticeable part of this process is the residents’ response. People say they felt the difference immediately: the rooms became warmer, and the street noise significantly decreased. A sense of comfort has emerged — something that had been missing before.

Regional manager Andrii Smal shares his thoughts:
“We follow the plan, but the most valuable thing is seeing how people respond. They immediately feel the changes. These simple improvements truly have a strong impact on their everyday comfort.”

This facility is yet another example of how targeted solutions can significantly improve living conditions. Sometimes, these small changes become the foundation for a sense of stability and normalcy — something critically important for people facing difficult circumstances.

The Strengthening resilience and protection of conflict-affected individuals, communities, and systems in Central and Eastern Ukraine project is implemented by the Charity Foundation “Stabilization Support Services” in cooperation with the international humanitarian organization CARE and with the support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
