Help that brings warmth: How Communities in Sumy region are getting through the harshest winter

This winter has become a serious test for all of Ukraine. Every day it challenges not only infrastructure and vital services, but also people themselves—their resilience, strength, and ability to stand together in difficult circumstances. The cold is felt most acutely in frontline communities, where low temperatures are compounded by constant air raid alerts, uncertainty, and the tense ожидання that local residents have been living with for more than a year.

In such conditions, warmth goes far beyond everyday comfort. It becomes a matter of safety, stability, and the ability to stay at home, close to loved ones. That is why we continue distributing fuel briquettes as part of the project “Winterization and Support for Vulnerable People in Frontline Communities of Sumy Region,” aimed at assisting those who are most affected by the consequences of the war.

For many families in Putyvl and surrounding communities, fuel briquettes have become an essential resource that helps them prepare for the cold season and reduces anxiety about winter frosts. At a time when circumstances can change almost daily, this kind of support provides a greater sense of confidence and allows people to focus on what matters most—caring for themselves and their loved ones.

Mr. Viktor, who has already received assistance through the project, speaks about its importance calmly, but very precisely:
“Right now, we live with the understanding that everything can change at any moment. When you have a supply of fuel, you don’t panic or urgently look for solutions—you can simply live through the day calmly. It gives you a sense of composure, not fear.”

Similar thoughts are shared by another resident of Putyvl, Mariia Vasylivna. For her, the fuel briquettes have become a symbol of reliability during a difficult period:
“For me, it’s прежде всього about the confidence that we will be able to stay warm. When it’s freezing outside and you know you can heat your home, it becomes easier to endure. In moments like these, you really feel that you’re not left alone with your hardships.”

We see that this kind of assistance changes not only living conditions, but also people’s inner state. It helps ease constant tension, makes it possible to plan at least the coming days, and maintain inner balance amid the harsh realities of life near the front line. In communities where every day requires extra strength, this support is especially valuable.

We continue to work side by side with communities because we are convinced that Ukraine will get through this extremely difficult winter together—through unity, shared responsibility, and concrete actions that help people remain warm, safe, and supported.

The project is funded by the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund and implemented by Stabilization Support Services (SSS) in cooperation with the Polish Humanitarian Action (PAH).
