Launch of Light Repairs for Homes Damaged by Bombardment in Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih

The photo shows a multi-story building in Zaporizhzhia, damaged by a ballistic missile strike. Most apartments had their windows blown out by the explosion, and some balconies were torn off.

“In this building, where we are currently working on restoration, there have been two strikes. First, a drone attack, and then a missile strike. Many apartments were damaged. Those who could moved in with relatives or rented housing, while others remain living in the dark with windows patched with makeshift materials,” says Yana Voloshina, manager of the Humanitarian Assistance to Besieged Cities and IDP-Hosting Locations Inside Ukraine project.

From April to June, the project team finalized a large volume of preparatory work: collecting applications, selecting a contractor, and signing agreements for the procurement of materials.

We have now moved to the main phase of the project, beginning light repairs in homes damaged by shelling in various districts of Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih.

“As part of the light repairs, we are working on restoring the thermal integrity of residential premises. We are replacing windows, entrance, and interior doors damaged by shelling to improve the building’s energy efficiency during the winter,” explains Yevhen Rasulov, a housing restoration specialist for the Humanitarian Assistance to Besieged Cities and IDP-Hosting Locations Inside Ukraine project.

Currently, the project team is making site visits, taking measurements, and communicating with recipients. Engineers, after collecting the necessary documents for the project implementation, together with the contractor, are conducting repeated measurements and drafting a defect report. Following this, we purchase materials of optimal quality.

“We are installing double-glazed windows with energy-saving film, which prevents heat loss in winter and maintains optimal temperatures indoors during hot weather. It is important to note that during window installation, we also treat the area with antifungal agents. This improves the quality of the installation, preventing side effects after the windows are installed,” Yevhen Rasulov explains.

We are confident that our collective efforts will improve the living conditions of those affected by bombardments. We are grateful to everyone who supports this important project.

The Humanitarian Assistance to Besieged Cities and IDP-Hosting Locations Inside Ukraine project is being implemented by the Charity Foundation “Stabilization Support Services” with the support of the humanitarian organization CARE.Ukraine.
