New Windows, Repaired Doors, and Mosquito Nets Bring Joy to Yuliya from Kherson

The Lifesaving Shelter, MPCA, SRH, and Protection Assistance for Conflict-Affected Communities in Rural Hromadas in Mykolaivska and Khersonska Oblasts project is coming to an end. Thanks to this initiative, many families in Kherson are now ready for winter, with repairs made to their windows, doors, and roofs, ensuring warmth and comfort in their homes.

Yuliya (name changed for safety reasons) also benefited from the project — our team repaired two of her windows after a missile hit the courtyard of her apartment building this summer. Yuliya, who has lived in Kherson since childhood and spent most of her life working as an engineer for the city council, knows her hometown well, having stayed even during the occupation.

“I was at home when the missile hit. I decided to turn off the TV, so I left the kitchen and went into another room — that was what saved my life. If I had stayed in the kitchen just a little longer, the glass would have broken and fallen on me. Local volunteers quickly covered my windows with plywood, for which I am very grateful. But after that, there was no daylight in my apartment — I lived as if in a basement,” Yuliya recalls.

She notes that the windows and jambs were installed with great care. She is particularly happy that the new windows, unlike the old ones, can be opened. She is also delighted to now have mosquito nets, which prevent mosquitoes and other insects from entering her apartment. She is thankful that, along with the windows, the team also helped fix the metal-plastic door system, which had been out of order.

The assistance provided to Yuliya was made possible by the Lifesaving Shelter, MPCA, SRH, and Protection Assistance for Conflict-Affected Communities in Rural Hromadas in Mykolaivska and Khersonska Oblasts project, implemented by the Charity Foundation “Stabilization Support Services” in collaboration with the international humanitarian organization CARE, with support from the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF).
