The Story of a сouple’s evacuation and кecovery from the Kharkiv region

Mykola and his wife lived in the village of Lisna Stinka, Kupianskyi District, Kharkiv Oblast. Due to constant attacks and the threat to their lives, the couple was forced to spend their days in the basement of their own home for over two weeks, going outside only at night.

After much hesitation, the family made the difficult decision to evacuate. However, that night, as Mykola went outside to gather their last belongings, an explosion occurred near their home. He sustained severe blast injuries to both lower limbs. His wife was also injured in the explosion, sustaining a trauma that led to hearing loss.

After the evacuation, the couple found shelter in a temporary housing facility in

the city of Kharkiv. The family needed comprehensive support to cope with the aftermath of their ordeal and adapt to their new living circumstances.

With the support of the “SSS” Charitable Foundation, Mykola and his wife received comprehensive assistance.

– To improve Mykola’s mobility, he was referred to an organization that provides appropriate assistive devices (a wheelchair and a walker).

– Mykola was also enrolled in the ASU program for compensation for individuals who have suffered from mine- and explosive-related injuries.

– Mykola’s wife receives regular psychological support to help her cope with the effects of the trauma she experienced and her forced displacement.

– Mykola himself received legal counseling on protecting his property rights and taking further legal steps.

Once his treatment is complete, the man plans to begin the process of applying for disability benefits, for which he is also receiving the necessary counseling and support.

The assistance is provided within the framework of “MESH: Multi-Sectoral Emergency Assistance to High-Risk Communities” by the Stabilization Support Services Foundation, coordinated by the Right to Protection Foundation, and supported by the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF).
