We Visited Mykolaivska and Khersonska Oblasts with the CARE Team

We undertook a trip to Mykolaivska and Khersonska oblasts alongside representatives from CARE Germany and CARE Denmark to see how the aftermath of the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant is being handled.

In Mykolaiska Oblast, our team made a stop at the Mykolaiv Geriatric Nursing Home, which cares for 125 individuals that include persons with disabilities and elderly people requiring support. We provided hygiene kits suitable for social institutions and people with disabilities as part of the Addressing the Immediate Multi-Sectoral Humanitarian Needs of IDPs and Conflict-Affected Populations Inside Ukraine project. In partnership with ChooseLove, we are also contributing towards the renovation of the institution’s kitchen.

In addition, our team traveled to Snihurivka in Mykolaiska Oblast, a location impacted by flooding. Here, we observed the functioning of the social laundry facility that we, in partnership with ChooseLove, had launched in the city. We also witnessed how the Snihurivka community is restoring residences affected by Russian aggression under the Humanitarian Assistance to Besieged Cities and IDP-Hosting Locations Inside Ukraine project. We held a meeting with Ivan Kukhta, the head of Snihurivka City Military Administration, discussing requirements for the restoration of flooded houses, business revival, and the creation of a community development strategy for the upcoming five years.

In Kherson, at the Kherson Hub, we distributed food packages as part of the Addressing the Immediate Multi-Sectoral Humanitarian Needs of IDPs and Conflict-Affected Populations Inside Ukraine project, supported by USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance. We also distributed emergency repair kits, a contribution made in partnership with CARE under the CARE Ukraine Winterisation and Resilience Program. Overall, at this hub, individuals can receive pet food, grocery kits, hygiene kits, bread, and drinking water, as well as to lend equipment for water pumping from flooded houses, hoses, rubber boots, and waterproof overalls free of charge.

In Khersonska Oblast, we paid a visit to the village of Zelenivka, which had suffered from flooding. We managed to talk with a local resident who had lived there prior to the full-scale invasion. With the outbreak of full-scale war, he relocated with his wife and five children first to the UK and later to Germany. After the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, he returned home to restore the house for his family, who wants to return to Ukraine.

We express our gratitude to our partners — USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, CARE, and ChooseLove — for their support of the restoration efforts in Mykolaivska and Khersonska oblasts following the flooding caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant.
