“I Help Because Who Else If Not Me”

Recently, our Foundation assisted the residents of Kherson by distributing non-food item kits. This support was made possible thanks to our partners and the project Providing Multi-Sectoral Humanitarian Assistance to Conflict-Affected Populations in Ukraine.

Among those who came to receive the aid was Halyna (name changed for safety reasons). She lives with her family in a multi-story building in Kherson that has been hit six times during the war. Several sections of the building were destroyed, and all its windows are now boarded up with plywood. Halyna’s family expressed their gratitude for the aid, emphasizing how essential the items were. They were especially pleased with the power bank, flashlight, mattress, and candles, all of which they started using immediately.

The family’s income is currently modest. Halyna has a disability, and both she and her husband are retirees. Their daughter, who uses a wheelchair after an injury, requires constant care. For them, this support is indispensable.

Previously, Halyna worked as a teacher and later in the tourism industry. Now, she assists the head of the building’s apartment owner association with management issues and constantly looks after elderly neighbors.

“In our building, there are many people over eighty years old. Most cannot care for themselves, move around, or carry heavy items, and many don’t know how to use smartphones. That’s why I’m always looking for help for them, registering them, assisting them in obtaining aid, and delivering it to their apartments. I help because who else if not me,” Halyna shared.

According to her, getting assistance now is very challenging since only two humanitarian organizations, including our Foundation, remain active in the city. She emphasized that the elderly, who struggle to move around, need help the most. Therefore, Halyna is determined to find carts to make it easier for them to transport their belongings.

The Providing Multi-Sectoral Humanitarian Assistance to Conflict-Affected Populations in Ukraine project is implemented by the Charity Foundation “Stabilization Support Services” in collaboration with the humanitarian organization CARE Ukraine and the Ukraine Response Consortium, with financial support from USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA).
