We have already assisted thousands of residents of Kherson with light home repairs for houses damaged by the war. Thanks to the project Providing Multi-Sectoral Humanitarian Assistance to Conflict-Affected Populations in Ukraine, hundreds of windows, doors, and roofs have been restored.
Among those now enjoying new windows is Yuliya (name changed for safety reasons). She was in urgent need of our support: she is unemployed and lacks sufficient income as she cares for her daughter, who has a disability, is unable to move independently, and cannot speak. At first, they had to endure the occupation together — they were unable to leave because Yuliya knew it would be too hard on her daughter. Last fall, they survived a missile strike on the building across the street, which blew out all the windows on one side of their home. With one window completely destroyed, they had to seal off her daughter’s room.
“Fortunately, we were in the living room on the opposite side of the building and were unharmed. We lived with boarded-up windows,” Yuliya recalls. “Now we have a beautiful, high-quality window, perfectly installed, and everything looks so white! I’m so happy and grateful. When I hear the sounds of shelling, I quickly open the new window so the glass doesn’t get broken again. I take care of the new window you installed!”
Yuliya is also thrilled with the quality of the triple-pane window, which provides excellent sound insulation. Her daughter, who is very sensitive to noise, feels much calmer with this new window in place.
Yuliya and her daughter’s home was repaired as part of the Providing Multi-Sectoral Humanitarian Assistance to Conflict-Affected Populations in Ukraine project, implemented by the Charity Foundation “Stabilization Support Services” in collaboration with the humanitarian organization CARE Ukraine and the Ukraine Response Consortium, with financial support from USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA).
