Training Video Course “IDP Councils: From Adaptation to Impact” — Why It’s Worth Watching

Feedback From IDP Council Chair Olena Hrekova

The effectiveness of IDP Councils stems from the professionalism of their members. That is why we have created a video training course titled “IDP Councils: From Adaptation to Impact” so that anyone who wants to can become part of positive change in their community.

We continue to share the feedback from those who have already completed their training. Today, Olena Hrekova, chair of the IDP Council under the Lvivska Oblast State Administration, shares her impressions.

“The video training course is a roadmap for building effective civil society at the hromada level. It is valuable that the course speakers are experts who directly assist in establishing IDP Councils throughout Ukraine, so their advice is based on real-life examples and current legislation.

I recommend paying special attention to the second episode, “Building Partnerships and Cooperation.” In it, the IDP Council acts as a bridge between the authorities and internally displaced persons. To make this connection strong, it is important to master the art of constructive dialogue, advocacy tools, and monitoring skills: how effectively the community spends funds allocated to support displaced persons, how much potential the community has for such support, and how to help the community understand and find this potential.

Of course, the course is primarily intended for members of IDP Councils, although I am sure that most of them have already taken it.

I would recommend this course to representatives of local self-government — local council members, community leaders, and social workers — to understand how to effectively engage displaced persons in community development. To law students who want to do an internship or work in non-governmental organizations. To active IDPs who are ready to defend their rights but do not know where to start and how to legally formalize their initiative.”
